Wicomico County
Wicomico County was created from Somerset and Worcester counties in 1867. The County was named after the Wicomico River from the Indian words "wicko" and "mekee" meaning a place where houses are built, apparently referring to an Indian town on the river banks. Wicomico County is the heart of the Delmarva Peninsula. Bordered on the north by Delaware and located between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Wicomico County is truly the hub of the entire Eastern Shore. The cities and towns of the area are steeped in history; full of natural beauty, bursting with antiques, arts and culture and filled with wonderful, friendly residents.
